Major social contributions and research results of the team in recent years

The research on “psychological analysis and reconstruction of group crisis” carried out by our team is based on the “Psychology of the Heart”, which is developed based on the integration of Analytical Psychology and Chinese culture. The academic exploration of this research focuses on 1) dreams and unconscious, 2) sandpaly and image, and 3) archetypes and cultural psychology. And the clinical practice aspect utilizes the techniques of sandplay therapy and embodied imagination, particularly in support of the “Garden of the Heart and Soul” public service program. Volunteers for the program are managed, trained and supervised on site and online by the research team members and graduate students with professional credentials. Since 2007, 85 “Garden of the Heart and Soul” stations have been established nationally, and the number of volunteers continues to grow. For the past three years, the program has seen more than 1,700 volunteers providing over 8,000 hours of service from 2016 to 2017, 2,000 volunteers for 9,000 hours of service from 2017 to 2018, and 2,200 volunteers for 10,000 hours of service from 2019 to 2020.

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic in early 2020, the “Garden of the Heart and Soul” program launched a psychological assistance project as early as January 26 to provide the “psychological self-help community” and one-on-one counseling services online for patients, health care workers and their families affected by the epidemic. In just over a month, the project is joined by more than 100 counseling volunteers; over 3,000 visitors have joined the self-help community, and more than 100 people have received one-on-one online counseling. The International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) has put the project on its official website and provide full support and appreciation for our work.

In addition, our team organized free or low-cost online psychological counseling services for the community, and established the "Bull Flower" public welfare psychological counseling project, which aims to provide "low fees" and "ordinary fees" one-on-one psychological services for people with psychological needs

Our team has also provided various services locally, including social work services for the Macao Gaming Industry Employees Home, psychological assistance during the epidemic, and the EAP project of Sands Macau. These works have achieved good results and have been well received by the Macau society.

In addition to outstanding social contributions, our team also has excellent academic achievements, as seen below for publications from the past three years:

Main research direction in the future

The Institute of Analytical Psychology at City University of Macau will continue to work with international professional and academic organizations such as the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP),  International Society for Sandplay Therapy (ISST), International Society of Embodied Imagination (ISEI) and the International Association of Expressive Sandwork (IAES) to strengthen and consolidate our position as the base for training and educating Jungian Analysts and Sandplay Therapists in the Greater China Region. The plan is to incorporate relevant professional qualification assessments into the Institute’s postgraduate programs to enhance our domestic and international competitiveness. Our future research focuses will be the influence of sleep and cognitive activities during sleep (such as dreams, nightmares, lucid dreaming, etc.) on cognitive functions and emotions, which will include the verification and expansion of existing dream theories, the impact of sleep disorders on cognitive dysfunction and depression, and the psychological treatments for sleep disorders.
