In response to the booming momentum of big data development, City University of Macau (CityU) established the Institute of Data Science (IDS) in 2018 based on the "Macau Research Center for Big Data in Urban Governance". The IDS is the first institute dedicated to data science in Macau. It upholds the university's motto of " Virtue, Knowledge, Practice" and aims to cultivate leading talents in data science and smart technology. Under the leadership of the university, the IDS is dedicated to the development of the new engineering discipline of CityU, and is committed to scientific research, talent cultivation, and industrial innovation in the field of big data, as well as to the in-depth intersection of multiple disciplines, in order to promote the frontier development of data science and related fields, and to contribute to the education, research, application, and industry incubation of data science and smart technology in Macau, the Greater Bay Area, China, and the world. The Institute will contribute to the education, research, application, and industry incubation of data science and smart technology in Macau, the Greater Bay Area, China, and the world.

Since its establishment, the IDS has closely followed the world development trend of data science and artificial intelligence, followed the development plan of data science and artificial intelligence in Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and the country, and met the needs of industrial development. The IDS will focus on and promote the professional construction of disciplines, basic theoretical research, core technology research and development, faculty construction, high-end talent training, base platform construction and technology achievement transformation in the field of data science and artificial intelligence to serve the economic and social development of Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and the country.

After years of construction and development, the IDS has a complete range of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree programs, and has established a number of research directions that are compatible with the development of Macao's diversified economy, including big data and smart tourism, big data and smart city, big data and smart finance, big health, information security, smart wireless communication and so on.

The IDS have multiple full-time researchers and a well-established teaching and research team, all of whom have doctoral degrees from top universities, forming a high-level academic team with a reasonable structure. At the same time, the IDS has also employed 12 renowned experts in the field as special professors to further enrich the academic team, including Prof. Yang Shanlin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Prof. Zhu Yaosheng of Peking University.

Major academic achievements in recent years

In the past three years, the IDS has undertaken nearly 10 research projects, including 2 national key projects and 5 projects of the Macao Foundation. More than 50 papers have been published in domestic and international core academic journals, and more than 30 have been accepted by SCI/EI. The representative project results and thesis results are as follows:

Future research direction

To promote the connotation development and to improve the teaching level of the university, the IDS will focus on CityU‘s running aims and its actual situation, and also meet the needs of social development.

1. To form the undergraduate talent training system which supports the development of new engineering goals of the university, to provide cutting-edge teaching and learning services, to lead the development of interdisciplinary and integrated disciplines, and to become the embodiment of the university’s greatest value in high-tech research, development, and incubation.

2. To actively promote diversified cooperation with enterprises. Based on the advantage of data analysis, the IDS aims to satisfy industry needs, to strengthen cooperation with enterprises, and to strive to undertake or participate in enterprise research projects of industries, so that scientific research can be well reflected in promoting regional economic development. The research and innovation in data science will be focused on the cultivation and construction of the state key laboratory of cross-domain data.

3. To study the relevant issues (such as technology, law, economy, industry, politics, society, etc.) involved in cross-domain data centers in Macao.

4. To study and solve the urgent problem that multinational enterprises have nowhere to store their international data, and to promote the realization of the "Internet of Everything" and to help Chinese enterprises to develop across domain.
